V. A. Artemyev (1885-1962) began work on rockets propelled by black powder in 1915. Between 1921 and 1933 he worked at the GDL and in 1934 joined the Research Institute of Jet Propulsion. He designed solid-propellant rocket engines for the Group for Studying Jet Propulsion in Leningrad between 1931 and 1933. Many of the smokeless powder rockets he had designed were successfully tested and of´Čücially approved.
