Cut-away view of interior of a proposed space-habitat, fully shielded against cosmic rays by spherical shell made of lunar, material, some 10,000 inhabitants would live and work in. The inner surface of the sphere, nearly a mile in circumference, would rotate to provide them with a gravity similar to that of Earth. Scientists envision a park-like setting, complete with trees, flowers, and streams. A separate area, exposed to the intense sunlight of space would be set aside for the growing of crops. This design was derived from the writings of J.D. Bernal in 1929.
