Abstract

This paper attempts to draw together all the existing evidence relating to the use of the early Congreve rockets during the Napoleonic period 1805 - 1819. It concentrates only on the rockets that were issued into service and attempts to ascertain the actual situation rather than the impression given by William Congreve and perpetuated by many authors since.
