The Shuttle is capable of maneuvering towards an EVA crewmember if he or she should become disconnected. For a station-docked EVA, this is not the case so the astronauts wear propulsive backpacks, called simplified aid for EVA rescue (SAFER), as a backup to their safety tethers.
