Sovereignty is about ownership, and that is a question of law. In history, sovereignty referred to the governance of a particular country, nation or territory as well as to the ownership of new lands. Sovereignty is intricately linked with jurisdiction and control over a territory. Whoever had sovereignty could claim ownership, not only of the land or territory, but also of the wealth it possessed.
