Capt. Iven C. Kincheloe (USAF) set new unofficial altitude record for manned flight at Edwards AFB, Calif. piloting, a Bell X-2 rocket-powered aircraft to a height of 126,200 feet.
University of Minnesota launched ONR Mylar plastic balloon from Minneapolis, establishing unofficial world altitude record of 145,000 feet for an unma tined balloon.
