In space travel the professional crewmembers are trained to do the tasks of flying the spacecraft and each of them is cross-trained to carry out any of those tasks. Often they are trained to assist with research too, but those science and technology missions are usually performed by the researcher or specialist crewmembers, who are trained to operate only a few spacecraft tasks beyond their mission. However, every person on the trip is trained to carry out safety and emergency tasks as may be required.
