NASA and the Department of Defense announced the settlement of patent infringement claim by the estate of the late Robert H. Goddard, which had been pending since 1951, for $1 million ($705,000 by USAF, $125,000 by USA, $100,000 by NASA, and $10,000 by USN).
IGY data released indicated that upper atmosphere's density becomes twice as great in December as in June.
