William H. Phillips of the Langley Flight Research Division published NACA report (TN-1027) which contained theoretical prediction of the then-not-recognized problem of roll coupling (sometimes referred to as "inertial coupling"). This phenomenon was to plague future high-speed aircraft with short wings and long fuselages, and almost 9 years passed before aerodynamicists were to use Phillips' theory to explain inertial coupling troubles.

Bell Laboratories announced invention of the transistor of the point-contact type.
