Space is a cold, dark environment that does not have breathable air for humans. Without a vehicle with vital life support systems, it would be impossible to travel both to and in space. NASA has been leading the nation's efforts to explore space since 1958. Since then NASA has done everything they possibly can to continuously improve vehicles and ensure a safe work environment. The Space Shuttle has been in use since April 12, 1981, when Columbia launched. In the past two years, additional changes have been made to make the Shuttle as safe as it can be. The automobile has been around since 1891 and, although there have been many safety features added and improvements made, there are still many associated risks. One can improve on a system and mitigate many risks related to the transportation system's novelty, but there will still be risks.
