Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite, and it was launched from Baikonur, in the former Soviet Union, on October 4, 1957. You could say that was the start of the Space Age. It did not do much research but transmitted a signal back to Earth so that it could be tracked. You could hear it on the radio going "beep, beep, beep" as it circled the Earth.
