There will be a commander in charge of the mission. If the flight activities are divided into shifts—there are usually two for round-the-clock schedules— there will be a shift commander. On the Space Shuttle if there is significant scientific or technical work (for example, Spacelab), there will be a person designated to be in overall charge of the investigations being performed.
