Pluto's name was suggested by eleven-year-old Venetia Burney from Oxford, England, shortly after the planet's discovery in 1930. The name has a double significance. Pluto is the Greek god of the underworld, an appropriate name for a world at the dark outer edge of the solar system. Also, its first two letters are the initials of Percival Lowell.
