A black hole represents the ultimate collapse of matter that compresses all the empty space found within the star to a point of infinite density called a singularity. The laws of physics cannot describe the physical state of matter within a black hole because there is no way to get any signals from the mass of a collapsed star once it disappears beyond its event horizon and forever slips away from our view.
