A musician named Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus on March 13, 1781. Although Uranus had been observed many times previously, even as early as 1690, astronomers assumed the planet was a star. Herschel first thought it was a comet. The planet's faint ring system wasn't discovered for another 200 years.
