Early in the American space program, astronaut Scott Carpenter, on the fourth Mercury space flight, reported seeing fireflies (the "Glenn effect") flying around his Mercury spacecraft. This report got a lot of people wondering what was out there. After Scott returned, engineers were able to identify the fireflies as water droplets escaping from the attitude control jets of his capsule. There have been numerous sightings of unidentified flying objects by pilots and other aviation personnel throughout history. What was seen has not been verified, but the stories range from the mildly interesting to the sensational.
