When we are down here on the Earth, the Sun's light is spread around by the atmosphere, and so the sky looks blue. Where there is no atmosphere, this cannot happen, so the sky looks black. If you stand on some planets, the sky has funny colors because the atmosphere is different from the one we know—for instance, on Mars the sky looks red.
