Explosions in space happen all of the time. The Sun has explosions on its surface often. However, if you are referring to explosions in space due to the vehicles crashing or blowing up, then we have spent the last two years making the Shuttle as safe as we possibly can. There is no technology that can completely remove all the risk from spaceflight, or even from daily living.
