Extreme environments are places that are very different from our normal living conditions. Space is one extreme environment. So are deserts, high mountaintops, and the deep ocean, to name a few others. In order to survive in extreme environments, we need to understand what those environments are like before we go there. For space exploration, this may mean sending robots before people, as we've done with orbital flights and missions to the Moon and Mars. Once we know what conditions to expect, we can develop technologies to protect us when we go there. For the high mountaintops this may mean oxygen tanks and warm clothing. For the deep sea this may mean very sturdy submarines. For space travel it means spacecraft with life support systems. In each case, we need to develop technologies and skills to maintain conditions suitable for human life. We need to bring little bits of our normal environment with us into extreme environments in order to survive.
