On average it is about 238,855 miles away, but its actual distance at any moment in time can vary considerably, between about 221,457 miles and 252,712 miles. This is because its orbit is not a perfect circle, but rather an ellipse, so sometimes it's closer (at perigee) and sometimes farther away (apogee). http://www.nasa.gov/worldbook/moon_worldbook.html (See CDROM)
