Most foreseeable emergencies and critical situations are planned for ahead of time. Procedures, processes and contingency or backup plans are developed, tested, and practiced before being provided to the crew and well in advance of a mission. Part of their training for the mission includes practicing the procedures for emergency situations. For each plan, there are contingency plans, and there are a lot of plans in place.
