Pluto's surface is a patchwork of creamy-white, ice-covered areas and dark brown dirt-covered areas. The brownish color comes from tarry— carbon-rich substances that cover the dark areas. These substances are probably produced from the action of ultraviolet light on the methane in Pluto's atmosphere.
