The 24 Apollo astronauts who circled the Moon in the period from 1968 to 1972 went the greatest distance from Earth—about 240,000 miles. Some astronauts have traveled further in space since then, but only by going around and around the Earth in low Earth orbit (LEO) in a space station for several months at a time. The next big journey, after the return to the Moon, will be to Mars.
