Each machine is a little different. Some of the machines are very much like the digital cameras that people use on Earth every day. Other machines are just like computers and the small telescopes that can be found at science shops. Generally, the machines collect light, x-rays, particles or other things in space, record what they are and send the information back to Earth. A digital camera collects light, records it in its memory and then sends it to your computer for you to see—the same as a detector in space.
