There will always be alternate landing sites. The Space Shuttle has three sites to choose from in the United States. Just as a commercial airplane reserves fuel allowing it to fly to an alternate runway, any aerospace vehicle would or must have the same options. These alternate sites can be anywhere on the ground track and within the cross range of the vehicle. Simply put, as long as the runway would not significantly increase the risk to the crew or vehicle, the space vehicle can land at any runway beneath or nearly beneath where it is projected to over fly in the future.
