Some satellites, like the Hubble Telescope, are scientific and help us understand how the Universe was formed. Other satellites look at the cloud patterns and temperatures and give us our weather and hurricane forecasts days in advance. Still others help us search for minerals, or study the oceans, or study the ozone layer which protects us from sunburn. Many long distance phone calls go by satellite, and war reporters send their news back from the battle zones via satellite. You get to see most of the Direct TV sports coverage because of satellites. Blackberry and pager messages also often go by satellite. It's hard to think of normal life today without satellites.
