Yes, there are many safety precautions. The Shuttle is placed on the pad at T-43 hours before liftoff. Engineers and ground crew conduct a thorough series of checks to test all of the systems and make sure they work; that they turn on and off as they are supposed to do, and that they are in their default positions, for example. These systems are tested numerous times in numerous conditions to make sure that they function appropriately.
