It is interesting to note that NASA consults with polar explorers to find out how they physically and mentally adapt to such challenges as extreme environments, severe weather conditions, long periods of isolation, time spent away from loved ones, dehydrated food diets, and getting along alone or with one's teammates. According to Norwegian polar explorer Liv Arnesen, "It is easy to get distracted by cold temperatures, strained muscles, and the grueling logistics of achieving a successful mission. It is important to meet the daily challenges, both expected and unexpected, while maintaining a sense of humor and wonder." It seems the extreme environments of the polar regions and space have many parallels.
