Space is not completely empty. Gases like hydrogen and helium are all around. There are also water and other molecules that can be used to form stars, planets, comets and life. But unless you are close to a star—the Sun for us—the space environment is very cold. Space also has many types of radiation such as x-rays and gamma rays.
