Two minutes after launch the speed is 3,438 miles per hour (mph) and increasing rapidly. Restraining devices are necessary to avoid injury when traveling at that speed. Prior to landing, during re-entry or blackout, the Shuttle is traveling at 16,700 mph. After re-entry the Shuttle uses Earth's atmosphere to slow down. Landing speed ranges from 213 to 226 mph, so you can see why restraining devices are required to avoid injury!
