If a very large asteroid were to be coming our way, there is very little we could do about it, unless it was discovered far enough in advance—many decades—so that we could deflect its orbit slightly. The best thing we can do is to survey the skies and try to detect any threatening object far in advance, so that we have the necessary time to do something if one is detected. Several search programs are doing this right now.
