The suits—especially the oxygen tanks—are thoroughly checked out prior to a planned EVA to avoid any malfunctions in the course of an EVA. On the Shuttle, the astronauts are always tethered to the vehicle and can quickly get back to the vehicle. On the ISS, they have jet packs to quickly return to the Station.
