(JC) Chewing gum helps open the ear canal that allows air into the middle ear. This canal has a small opening inside the mouth that connects to the middle ear. Astronauts in space often have body fluids that shift toward their heads and this sometimes makes it harder to clear their ears. Chewing gum can help this.
