One reason scientists think that the Moon came from an enormous impact long ago in Earth's history—the big whack theory—is that the abundance of elements in the Moon's crust are very similar to those found in the Earth's crust. These chemicals are all mixed together in the form of different minerals and rocks that make up the Moon.
