New technology leads us toward our envisioned fleet, but it will not be easy. If the specific energy of launch vehicles can be increased, then larger payloads can be carried to orbit. Some of this added capacity could be utilized to add safety features such as better escape systems, improved reliability, simplified maintenance and servicing—all of which should reduce costs and improve safety. Still, market demand will determine the flight rates and the ultimate costs and profitability. If technology can enable launches at sufficiently low prices, then space commerce will surely grow, and fleets of launch vehicles will eventually be required to handle the traffic. This may be many decades away.
