This is a difficult question to answer; Einstein figured it out with his theory of general relativity. The answer is that it doesn't go on forever, but it doesn't have an edge either. Think of a rubber band. It has a size and a length but no end. In a strange way, space folds around like that, so that it has a definite size but no edges.
