Our minds try to make patterns in what we see in nature. The contrast of the dark lava flows of the Mare against the much lighter lunar highlands creates a pattern which can be interpreted as a face. Other cultures around the world interpret different things, including a leaping rabbit and an old man with a bundle of sticks on his back.
