Living and working in space has many effects on the human body, and we are still learning about the effects that a prolonged stay in micro-gravity has on the body. If it were possible to have a vehicle that exactly simulated the Earth's atmosphere and environment, it would most likely be safe to stay a long time. It also depends upon what is considered as a long time. So far, the longest any astronaut or cosmonaut has continuously stayed in space is more than one year.
