The Shuttle has two solid rocket boosters and three main engines that run on hydrogen and oxygen. Both the solid rockets must fire to launch the Shuttle. But if one of the main engines should fail, the Shuttle can still ascend into orbit, or it can abort to Africa or Europe, or it can return back to the launch site, depending on when the failure occurs during the ascent.
