We have departments that determine the right technology necessary for the current mission. We usually are not that far from the right technology. It is either stowed aboard the vehicles or transported to the vehicle, as in the case of the ISS. It is important to emphasize that there is no technology that can remove all the risk from spaceflight, or even remove it from just living day to day. But we do live reasonably safe lives if we obey all the rules our parents and teachers provide us, just as spaceflight is reasonably safe if all the safety rules are followed as well. Nothing is without risk, especially anything that's worthwhile. As one of the astronauts stated, "I think we explore because it's the right thing to do to learn. We've always been explorers. It's in our nature as a people to explore beyond the boundaries of our knowledge and limitations. Exploring in space is part of that learning process and we're gonna continue to explore."
