We need to be careful to find out what it will take to allow humans to survive for long periods of time in the micro-gravity environment of space. For instance, we now know that humans lose about one percent of their bone mass density for every month they are in orbit. NASA is studying ways to minimize this problem by having all astronauts and cosmonauts work out for at least two hours every day on a resistive exercise treadmill so they can maintain their muscle strength. It is also very important to pay attention to the psychological needs of the crew by providing them with a good balanced diet, plenty of time to relax, and challenging work assignments to help keep their minds active and challenged. NASA tries to allow plenty of time for all flight crew astronauts to communicate with their friends and family on the ground so it will help lessen the stress of being away from Earth for which can cause damage to human DNA, cells and soft tissue.
