Basically, the Shuttle is a truck for getting payloads and experiments into space. Once it gets in orbit, the main activities have to do with conducting the experiments, gathering data, and perhaps placing a payload, such as the Hubble Telescope, into orbit, or perhaps delivering cargo to the International Space Station.
