Astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on mission 51-I took time August 29 to observe Hurricane Elena, the Washington Post reported. Commander Joe H. Engle took photos of the storm, a dense white circular mass that stretched across almost half of the Gulf of Mexico, and noted a second storm in the western part of Gulf.

Among the contingencies NASA faced was the possibility that the storm could strike the Houston area and knock out communications with the Johnson Space Center. A NASA spokesman said they could quickly switch operation to the Goddard Space Flight Center.

The crew also that day launched the Syncom IV-4 satellite, which was almost identical to the satellite the crew would attempt August 30 to salvage. (W Post, Aug 30/85, A3)
