Phillips, retiring commander of the Air Force Systems Command and NASA's Apollo Program Director from 1964-69, said in an interview. Gen. Phillips speculated that aircraft, including the B-1 bomber under development by the U.S., would be an important part of the military force "for as many decades ahead as anyone cares to project."
