The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched its first Ariane 4 booster from the Kourou launch center in French Guiana. The Ariane 4, the latest and most powerful ESA-built booster, carried two European telecommunications satellites. The launch had been delayed by 24 hours because of a faulty sensor on the rocket's third stage. (FBIS-Weu-88-238, Dec 11/88; SSR 1988 109C-D; NY Times, Dec 12/88)
