NASAs Office of Space and Terrestrial Applications (OSTA) announced its selection of 9 experimental and 10 theoretical teams to participate in the upper-atmosphere research satellite (UARS) program designed to provide data on energy input, chemical composition, and dynamics of Earth's stratosphere and mesosphere. Interest in this area had increased with the realization of potential damage to the ozone layer from high-flying aircraft and from chemicals in aerosol sprays, refrigeration, air-conditioning, and foam-blowing operations.
The experimental teams would develop instruments for direct measurement of upper-atmosphere winds, solar-ultraviolet radiation, energetic-particle interaction with the upper atmosphere, and variation of chemical content with altitude. Theoretical teams would develop upper-atmosphere models to be used with new acquired data for assessing the impact of man's activities on the delicate processes in the stratosphere and for improving understanding of upper-atmosphere chemistry and dynamics.
