Indian Space Research Organization's experimental satellite communication earth station at Ahmedabad began tracking Apollo 17 spacecraft. It was first time India had tracked a space mission. (Delhi radio, FBIS-India, Bhutan, Sikim, 12/13/72, 01)

President Nixon issued Proclamation 4174 calling upon public to observe December 17, 1972, as Wright Brothers Day, "both to recall the accomplishments of the Wright Brothers and to provide a stimulus to aviation in this country and throughout the world." (PD, 12/11/72, 1738-9)
