Naval Research Laboratory announced its analyses had indicated that lunar soil "had been oxidized to some extent in the nearly nonexistent lunar atmosphere." All lunar soil returned by Apollo astronauts had displayed a characteristic resonance when examined by electron-spin-resonance spectrometry. Source of resonance had been thought to be iron metal. By oxidizing powder of simulated lunar glass, NRL scientists had produced for first time in the laboratory a resonance resembling characteristic resonance of lunar soils. Findings showed "conclusively that the `characteristic' resonance arises from chemical compounds involving titanium dioxide and ferric oxide produced by oxidation of fine soils in the lunar environment." Dr. John Teegan, Chief of Launch Site Medical Operations at Kennedy Space Center, announced his resignation to press at Cape Kennedy. Dr. Teegan, who would return to private practice, said he had resigned because his patients-astronauts-were too healthy. Astronauts were unusually healthy because they were in excellent physical condition when they were chosen and made it a point to stay that way. "I was educated to care for people who were ill and I want to get my feet wet again in clinical medicine. This chapter in space history was a very valuable experience that few people have had the opportunity to experience." (Reuters, B Sun, 2/13/72; KSC PAO)
