Lt. Col. John A. Powers, Public Affairs Officer for NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, said Astronaut Leroy Gordon Cooper’s MA-9 flight may extend to “as many as 22 orbits. If the flight lasts that long it will be a 34-hour flight.” Speaking before Texas Associated Press Managing Editors’ Association, Powers said NASA had not yet decided whether Cooper’s flight would be last of Project Mercury; the decision on whether another [Mercury flight] will be necessary will be made after Cooper’s flight.
