An ESA Ariane 3 launch vehicle carrying an experimental communications satellite was successfully launched from the Kourou launch facility in French Guiana. The 161-foot Mane 3 placed the European Olympus 1 satellite in a preliminary orbit from which it would boost itself into a 22,300-mile geosynchronous orbit over the equator. Robert O. Aller, NASA's Director of Space Operations, resigned to avoid falling under a new Government ethics regulation that restricts post-Federal employment on Government-related contracts. Aller became the ninth high level NASA official to resign in recent weeks and the third to cite publicly the new regulation as the cause for his departure.
